Professional development

As we geared up for the start of Term 1, our dedicated staff, familiar faces and newcomers, engaged in professional development sessions. As part of the development, we had guest speaker Ned McCord, who Implemented the Yiramalay Wesley Studio School project, a partnership between Wesley College in Melbourne and the Bunuba Aboriginal Community in the Fitzroy Valley of WA. Ned, who was the Executive Director of Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School for 10 years, continues to remain connected to the community as a consultant to SSA. Drawing from his vast experience collaborating with Aboriginal communities over the years, he shared invaluable insights. Ned emphasised the belief that everyone at Yiramalay is a teacher, stressing the importance of attentive listening and empathetic understanding in the learning process. Ned offered advice and answered questions from new and returning staff, offering valuable perspectives on relinquishing traditional Western power dynamics and approaching situations with a fresh perspective.

Yiramalay Studio School stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of Indigenous wisdom and Western education. Rooted in the 4 circles of learning, the school aims to provide a safe, holistic learning environment that celebrates Aboriginal culture and values while delivering a high-quality education to prepare students for the future.

Key to the success of learning at Yiramalay

At Yiramalay, every individual, student or staff, plays a role in the learning process. In Aboriginal society, teachers, often represented by Elders, command profound respect. Upon joining Yiramalay, many educators find themselves elevated to positions of authority, not by asserting power but by demonstrating integrity, humility, and a willingness to listen. This power requires care and engagement because students need to feel culturally accepted and comfortable before any education can truly begin.

Learn to listen and to feel

It's essential to recognise that everyone has unique learning needs and preferences. These individual differences aren't found in textbooks; instead, they require active listening, observation, and empathy. When it comes to sharing knowledge, there's no prescribed sequence or designated authority within a group. Education occurs when individuals are receptive to listening and engaging, while those who aren't ready should be respected until they're willing to participate.

At SSA, teachers relinquish perceived power positions and approach learning with fresh perspectives, appreciating cultural diversity, and daring to share personal stories to foster trust and understanding. Honesty and mutual respect in all interactions plays a critical role,  it's important to observe, listen, and empathise deeply.
