Meet Kevin Oobagooma, a Year 12 student at Yiramalay Studio School. He joined Yiramalay at the end of 2022 and has already earned the respect of his classmates as a student leader. For Kevin, Yiramalay's uniqueness lies in the opportunity to explore Bunuba country, connect with its people, and share their stories.

Tell me about your journey to arrive at Yiramalay Studio School?

My name is Kevin Oobagooma and I'm from Derby.  I came to Yiramalay at the end of 2022 and made Yiramalay my home. I'm in Year 12 and the people around  Yiramalay look at me as a student leader. Yiramalay is a good place for me to be, it suits me. I’ve been to other schools but they didn't match me.

Hopefully, I'll be out of school by this year, and my dream is to find a job move somewhere away from home and do good things in life

What do you enjoy about learning at Yiramalay?

There are a lot of boys around here, but we all get along. We're all one family.  We come together with other people from Yiramalay,  Yiramalay Aunties, and kids. We come in and learn different kinds of cultures and it's so great to connect to this one place while we all are in Bunuba country. People come to see and learn about Bunuba, and maybe someday we'll go up and see their country, their side of the area.

How would you describe the kind of learning you do?

We do two-way learning here. For an hour, we will do academic learning in class and then the other hour we go out on-country and learn language about trees or animals. We go out with elders too, which is really good.

A lot of kids up here are doing industry learning.  You can work here while you're in school, or you can go away.
