Aaron James, a Yolngu man from northeast Arnhem Land, a coastal region in the Northern Territory, began his journey at Yiramalay Studio School as a student in 2016. After completing his schooling, he felt a strong calling to return, dedicated to guiding and empowering the next generation of students.

Aaron, now a mentor to Yiramalay, reflects on his transformation from a student who had little interest in school to becoming a mentor and how it has developed him and his identity. Aaron's journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship, reminding us all of the potential that lies within every student.

When you were a student at Studio Schools in 2016, how did it change your life?

It really changed my life. I had no experience at school whatsoever. I didn't want to be at school, but when you're in a place like this, out on-country, you feel connected.

Despite not being from here originally, I felt a strong bond with the land, and my spirit remained unchanged from the very beginning.

Before you came to  Yiramalay, did you know how to speak English?

Yeah, not very well.  English is not my first language, It's my second language, and speaking English is very hard for me. It's hard, coming from an isolated community, into a world like this, where you have so many people around you. But I am coming out of my comfort zone, Yiramalay has provided so much for me.

What do you think makes Studio Schools so special?

The mentors, I really like the mentors. When I was schooling down here, that is what changed me. I wanted to make my mentors and the community proud. The sense of responsibility towards my mentors and the families around me made my journey truly special.

What's your message to the young people who are thinking about school?

Never let anyone sabotage your learning, or your education, because there are too many people around you who support you, are willing to help you, and give you that opportunity to thrive in life.
